A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off Chiapas, Mexico on July 17, 2026, triggering Pacific tsunami alerts for Mexico and Guatemala and shaking felt across three countries.

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Chiapas in southern Mexico on July 17, 2026, about 58 kilometers west-southwest of Puerto Madero at a shallow depth near 18 kilometers. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center forecast hazardous waves along the coasts of Mexico and Guatemala, and the shaking was felt across Guatemala and El Salvador. USGS models placed more than a million people in the zone of strong shaking.

A quake this size is the real-world version of the drill. When the ground moves you get the plan you already rehearsed, so the work happens before the shaking starts. Bolt the water heater and tall furniture to the studs, learn where the gas shutoff is, and keep a bug out bag staged by the door for the aftershock evacuation that often follows. If the hazard maps put you on shaky ground, places most at risk of earthquakes is worth reading before the next one rather than after.

The hours after a large quake are a water problem as much as a structural one. Mains break, treatment plants lose power, and a boil-water notice can outlast the shaking by days, so a household water storage reserve does more for you than any single piece of gear. On the coast, a strong quake is its own tsunami warning: if the shaking near the shore is hard enough to make standing difficult, move to high ground and do not wait for an official alert.
