On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington State, killing 57 people and burying hundreds of square miles under ash and debris.

On this day in 1980, Mount St. Helens in Washington State erupted after weeks of warning quakes and a visibly bulging north face. The blast tore the top off the mountain, flattened forests for miles, and sent ash so high it turned day to night across several states. Fifty-seven people died.

Some of the dead were inside the official danger zone, but others were beyond it, caught by an eruption larger than the maps had planned for. The ash that fell downwind clogged engines, collapsed roofs, and made the air hard to breathe far from the mountain itself.

The lesson is that natural warnings deserve respect even when leaving is inconvenient. For a volcanic eruption or any slow-building hazard, having a way to filter the air, a bag ready to go, and the discipline to move when told are what keep a warning from becoming a tragedy.
