Heavy plastic sheeting and tape cover a broken window, seal a room or insulate one warm room in winter.
Plastic sheeting lets you patch a broken window, close off a room or hold heat in one warm room when the power is out. Choose a roll thick enough to stand up to wind and tape.
- Thickness: Pick 6 mil polyethylene, which resists tears from wind, staples and rough window frames.
- Size: Stock a roll of at least 10 by 25 feet, enough to cover several windows or wall off a doorway.
- Color: Choose clear sheeting for windows to keep daylight, and black sheeting where you want privacy or a blackout.
- Tape: Store a roll of duct tape or sheathing tape with the sheeting so you can seal the edges right away.
- Storage: Keep the roll in its box and out of sunlight, because UV light makes plastic brittle over time.
- Fasteners: Add a staple gun or thin wood strips to hold the sheet tight across a large opening.
