Water Storage Containers

Food-grade jugs or stackable containers that hold the household's stored water. Two weeks at one gallon per person per day is 14 gallons each, more than bottled water alone usually covers.

Water storage containers hold the water your family drinks, cooks with and washes in when the tap stops. For a two week bug in, plan on 14 gallons per person, plus extra for pets.

  • Food-grade plastic: Choose HDPE containers rated for drinking water so the water stays free of chemicals and off flavors.
  • Size you can lift: Pair 5 to 7 gallon jugs you can carry with stackable bulk containers that fit in a closet or under a bed.
  • Light and heat: Pick opaque blue or dark containers and keep them in a cool, dark spot to slow algae growth.
  • Tight caps and a spout: Look for sealed screw caps and a spigot or pump so you can pour without touching the rest of the water.
  • Fresh rotation: Use containers that have only ever held food or water, and refill stored tap water every six months to keep it fresh.
