Bug Out Location (BOL)

A bug out location (BOL) is a predetermined destination you plan to reach when home is no longer safe.

Also known as: BOL or retreat

Why a bug out location matters

A bugout without a destination is not a plan, it is just fleeing. The BOL is what turns evacuation into strategy: a known, prepared place to travel toward, ideally stocked in advance so you arrive as a resident rather than a refugee. Its value is stability at the worst possible moment, when you are exhausted, stressed, and out of your normal environment.

With a BOL, you are not improvising shelter, water, and security on the fly. You are executing a route you have already thought through, to a place you have already provisioned, which is the difference between purposeful movement and aimless flight. A well-chosen BOL also solves the problem of the golden horde by sitting far enough from population centers to avoid the flood of unprepared evacuees, while remaining close enough to actually reach on the fuel and time you will have. That balance is the hardest and most important part of the choice.

In a prolonged societal collapse, the BOL becomes more than a refuge, it becomes the base from which everything else is built: food production, defense, and community. Understanding the concept, then, is really about understanding that survival past the first few days depends on having somewhere viable to survive, prepared before you ever need it.

What makes a good BOL

  • Far from population centers, but reachable on your realistic range
  • A reliable water source and defensible terrain
  • Shelter already in place, from a cabin to a dugout or hardened bunker
  • Supplies pre-positioned so you are not carrying everything
  • More than one route in

The overlooked part: getting there

A BOL is only as good as your ability to reach it, which means a packed bag, a fueled vehicle, and a plan for blocked roads. Land-navigation skills such as a reliable pace count matter if the last stretch is on foot.
