Professor Se Jeong, attends a biotech conference-only to witness it spiral into catastrophe when a rapidly mutating virus is unleashed. As the outbreak spreads and the infected begin to transform, authorities seal off the entire facility.

Prepper Review

Colony brings Yeon Sang-ho back to the outbreak territory he mastered with Train to Busan, this time confining the horror to a sealed biotech facility. From a preparedness standpoint, the setup is instructive precisely because it strips away the open road and forces everyone into a single controlled space that suddenly becomes a cage. The moment authorities seal the building, the film asks the question every prepper should already be asking: what happens when the people in charge decide your survival is an acceptable loss?

The pacing and tension are strong, and Jun Ji-hyun anchors the chaos with a believable performance as someone trying to think her way out rather than fight her way out. The infection itself is pure genre spectacle and should not be mistaken for a realistic pandemic model, so anyone hoping for a grounded epidemiology lesson will be disappointed. What the film does deliver is a vivid case study in venue awareness, exit planning, and the danger of trusting a locked door to keep the threat on the correct side of it.

For the self-reliant viewer, Colony is worth watching as entertainment with a few transferable habits baked in. Note the exits, move before the crowd does, and never assume containment protocols exist for your benefit. It is a solid, tense ride that rewards the prepper mindset even as its monster stays firmly in the realm of fiction.

Possibility

Could this scenario actually happen?
4

A biotech conference disrupted by an engineered or accidentally released pathogen is not fantastical at the level of a laboratory leak, and history offers real examples of dangerous agents escaping containment. Where the scenario departs from reality is the rapid mutation that transforms infected people into aggressive attackers within a compressed timeline. Viruses do not remake human behavior and physiology in minutes. The core premise of a facility outbreak has some grounding, but the zombie mechanism pushes it firmly into speculative fiction.

Realism

Does it play out like real life would?
5

Director Yeon Sang-ho has a strong track record of grounding outbreak chaos in believable human panic, and the decision by authorities to seal the facility mirrors real containment doctrine, where sacrificing those inside to protect the wider population is a genuine and grim policy consideration. The crowd behavior, the breakdown of order, and the desperation of the trapped feel plausible. What strains believability is the speed of transformation and the physical capabilities of the infected, which follow genre convention rather than biology. Character reactions are emotionally credible even when the threat itself is not.

Educational

Is there anything worth learning here?
5

The most useful lesson here is situational awareness in crowded venues and the value of identifying exits the moment you enter any large facility. The film illustrates how quickly a controlled environment becomes a trap when authorities lock the doors, reinforcing the prepper principle that you should never rely on institutions to prioritize your survival. Viewers can study crowd dynamics, chokepoints, and the importance of moving early before panic sets in. The fantastical infection limits direct medical takeaways, but the human behavior and quarantine themes carry real value.
