Measures humidity in a storage space. Moisture quietly ruins dry staples, and a hygrometer tells you whether the room itself is the problem before the food pays for it.
- Aim to keep storage below roughly sixty percent relative humidity. Above that, cardboard, paper labels, and can seams all start to suffer.
- Choose digital with a min and max memory over a dial. What matters is what the room did overnight, not what it is doing while you stand in it.
- Place it at food level rather than eye level. Humidity stratifies, and the floor of a basement is not the ceiling of one.
- Expect cheap units to drift. If a reading looks too good to be true, check it against a second unit.
- Fix the room rather than the shelf. If the space reads consistently damp, a dehumidifier beats any amount of desiccant.
