A record US cyclosporiasis outbreak tied to fresh produce has topped 10,000 confirmed cases across 47 states, a reminder that food safety is preparedness.

The largest wave of cyclosporiasis the United States has recorded is still building. As of August 4, the CDC had confirmed 10,468 domestic cases across 47 states since May 1. The agency also counted 517 hospitalizations and two deaths, and it expects the number to keep rising through the summer produce season. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite spread through fresh produce and water tainted with feces, and the 2026 cyclospora outbreak already dwarfs the same stretch last year.

Federal investigators have not named a single food source. Earlier outbreaks traced back to imported fresh produce such as basil, cilantro, and bagged salad, and the CDC is still working several case clusters this year. One linked group alone covers more than 400 cases across several states. Because the parasite needs days in the environment before it can infect anyone, it does not pass person to person, so the focus stays on what reaches your kitchen.

For a prepared household, this outbreak is a reminder that food safety sits inside preparedness, not beside it. Rinsing fresh produce under clean, running water before eating is the strongest everyday defense, though the CDC warns that produce washes and rinses do not reliably kill Cyclospora. Cooking produce removes the risk outright. Boiling destroys the parasite too, so water purification stays part of any safe-water plan when a supply is in doubt.

The illness brings watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fatigue that can last for weeks without treatment. For most healthy adults the real danger is dehydration, not the parasite itself. Staying hydrated and calling a clinician when symptoms linger are the practical moves, and a prescription antibiotic clears the infection. Wash what you eat, learn the symptoms, and keep an eye on the fresh food in your cart. Be Prepared Not Scared.
