Planetary defense is the organized, global effort to detect, track and ultimately deflect asteroids and comets that could threaten earth. For most of human history an impact from space was something that could only be feared, never prevented. That has changed. We now live in the first era in which humanity possesses both the telescopes to spot a dangerous object years in advance and, increasingly, the technology to do something about it. For a prepper interested in cosmic threats, understanding planetary defense is understanding the one large-scale disaster that human effort might actually stop before it begins.

The foundation of planetary defense is detection. Networks of ground-based and space-based telescopes continuously scan the sky, cataloguing near-earth objects and calculating their orbits far into the future. The overwhelming majority of large asteroids capable of causing global damage have already been found and confirmed to pose no threat for the foreseeable future. The ongoing work focuses on the smaller but still dangerous objects, the ones large enough to devastate a city or region, which are far more numerous and harder to spot until they are relatively close.

Detection only matters if it leads to action, and this is where recent progress has been genuinely remarkable. Missions have now demonstrated that a spacecraft can be deliberately crashed into an asteroid to measurably change its orbit, proving that deflection is not science fiction but a tested capability. Given enough warning time, even a small nudge applied years before a potential impact is enough to move an object safely off a collision course, which is why early detection and rapid response planning are the twin pillars of the entire enterprise.

From a preparedness standpoint, planetary defense is a source of measured reassurance rather than alarm. The realistic risk of a civilization-ending impact in any given year is extremely low, and the systems now in place make a surprise strike from a large object increasingly unlikely. This is a threat that experts are actively watching and working to counter on humanity's behalf, which sets it apart from the disasters an individual must face largely alone. Keeping perspective here is part of good preparedness, since sensational impact predictions circulate constantly and rarely survive contact with the actual science. None of this means the topic deserves obsession, and a family unsettled by a dramatic headline can usually calm its nerves in minutes by consulting the same space agencies that would be the first to sound a genuine alarm.

Still, the prepper's instinct to prepare for the improbable is not misplaced. A smaller regional impact or airburst, of the kind that has occurred within living memory, could arrive with little warning and cause serious local damage. The response to that possibility is the same broad resilience that serves for any sudden wide-area event: stored supplies, a communication plan, and awareness of legitimate warning channels. Planetary defense handles the part of the problem no individual can, and sensible household preparedness handles the part that no agency can do for you.
