Vog

Vog is volcanic smog: a haze that forms when sulfur dioxide and other gases from an erupting volcano react with oxygen, moisture and sunlight to make fine sulfate particles. In the United States it is most familiar in Hawaii, where long eruptions at Kilauea send it downwind across the islands, and how thick it gets depends on the eruption and the wind.

Preppers meet vog because it turns an eruption into an air-quality problem miles from any lava. It can bring headaches, sore throats, watery eyes and coughing, and it is hardest on children, older adults and anyone with asthma or other lung or heart conditions. Staying indoors with windows closed, running an air purifier and following official air-quality alerts keep a household comfortable while it lasts.

Vog is one part of a wider volcanic plan. To get ready for ash, gas and evacuation together, start with how to prepare for a volcanic eruption.
