Celestial Objects

Celestial objects are the natural bodies we see beyond Earth's atmosphere: the sun, the moon, the planets, the stars, and visitors such as comets and asteroids. They follow regular, predictable paths across the sky. That predictability keeps them useful long after a phone battery dies.

Preppers meet the term in navigation and timekeeping. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The North Star marks north in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Southern Cross helps you find south below the equator. Moon phases tell you how much light you will have for moving or working after dark. The sun also matters as the source of space weather, since strong solar storms can disrupt radio, GPS and power grids. Asteroids bring the term into risk planning too, where scientists track their paths and rate the asteroid impact risk long before any close pass.

Learn to read the sky before you need it, and you gain a backup to GPS that never needs charging. Practice on a clear night at home, and the skill is ready when your family needs it.
