Geofence Warrant

A geofence warrant is a court order asking a technology company for the location data of every device that was inside a drawn area during a set window of time. Instead of naming a suspect, it starts with a place and a time and works back to the people who were there, which is why it is sometimes called a reverse location warrant.

Courts are divided over whether a warrant that sweeps in everyone nearby is too broad, and some companies have changed how they store location history in response. For preppers, it is a reminder that a phone's location history is a record someone else can be asked for, and the habits in our guide on how to avoid being tracked online decide how much of it exists.
